My Students
My fifth graders are curious and excited about learning. Many come from low socio-economic households. Most receive free or reduced-price lunches and many are English language learners.
My students love working and playing together and many began their schooling together in Kinder.
My students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. As their teacher, I want to make sure that when they walk through our classroom door, they are immersed with love, motivation, rigor, and safety.
My Project
The beginning of the school year is an important time to set the tone of inclusion, empathy, and acceptance. My students need a class set of the book Wonder.
I will use the book Wonder to help create a classroom community where all my students will feel safe to learn, create, ask questions, and make mistakes without the fear of ridicule from other students.
Wonder is an amazing book about a fifth grade boy who must overcome huge obstacles in order to "just fit in." I will use this critically acclaimed book as a way to encourage the discourse needed to set my students up for success.
