Wonderful Wednesday!

My students need a variety of 6 book titles with different reading levels to participate in a monthly reading activity with family members.

Entering the classroom before the bell rings, eating a pastry and drinking hot chocolate, and sharing an inviting book with a parent, aunt, or older sibling is about as good as it gets when you’re eight or nine years old. Students in my class had that experience last year when they attended our monthly “Wonderful Wednesday!” celebration. I teach third grade in an Oregon school in which 90% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our kids do not have books at home, nor do they have the opportunity to read with their parents on a regular basis. In addition, one of my goals is to increase family involvement in our school. My third grade colleagues and I decided we would provide that opportunity by sponsoring a celebration where students and parents came before school, shared a continental breakfast of pastries, bagels, and beverages, and had the chance to choose and read a book to a family member. At the end of the activity, students were able to take the book home for their “very own.” We would like to continue the tradition of “Wonderful Wednesday” this year with the help of book donations. Our book supply has dwindled to about 6 books, and your help will ensure that we will be able to carry on and bring literature into the lives of our children, increase family involvement, and bring powdered sugar smiles to happy readers.
