All children should have an understanding and appreciation for nature. My third grade students hardly know what nature is. They are from an impoverished area of the city in which parks have more beer bottles than trees. Nature can be a very remote concept for some. Our science unit is now focusing on animals and nature. One way I would like to expose nature to them is through the dissection and exploration of owl pellets. Sound gross? It kind of is. Kids love it! This experience will allow them to: 1 Develop an understanding of the food web. 2 Become curious about the natural world. 3 Have a hands on experience with nature that is otherwise almost impossible to get. 4 Develop an understanding of the food web. 5 Witness the predator-prey relationship. 6 Improve their expository writing skills by writing about something they truly enjoy. 7 Learn about science in ways other than text books. I would like to purchase an owl pellet dissection kit. The kit will provide a wonderful nature experience for 30 students to enjoy. It also contains 30 owl pellets, display posters, and a teacher's guide. Could you please help introduce nature to these super children?
