Wonder: Learning Empathy through Reading

My students need 65 copies of of the book Wonder to use as a mentor text. This book will help students learn about current social issues and the need for empathy to stop bullying.

My Students

"Kindness is your greatest strength," proverb. My students learn and apply this idea in school to help each other learn and grow.

My students attend a high poverty urban middle school.

My students are eager to learn and eager to read. Many of my students ask me, "What are we going to read next?" My students love receiving newly released books that allow them examine real world problems through discussion, ask questions, and analyze characters. My students are also eager to make connections between the books we read and their lives.

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom hearing students asking "Are we going to read 'Wonder'?" The book "Wonder" will help students address the real world issue of bullying through discussion, reflection, and analyzing the characters and motivations. As a result of reading this book, students will be empowered to reach out to others at our school and in our community.

This project is important to help us teach students the importance of kindness and empathy in our lives.

By reading a high interest, well-written book students will make more gains in reading as well as be able to make a difference to others in their lives.
