Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is important to offer middle school students opportunities to think about different ways of experiencing the world. The powerful novel, "Wonder", explores the experience of a young boy who is physically very different and offers students a chance to see the world through his eyes.

Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform it into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.

There are approximately one thousand students at our middle school, and we are employing peace-building and community-building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves. Our school is a melting pot! About 40% of our students label their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% Latino, 4% Black, 3% Asian, 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Approximately two-thirds of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The students at our school are full of life and love for learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually and personally.

My Project

The Charter of the United Nations recognizes the inherent dignity, worth and the equal rights of all members of the human family as the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. In this project-based unit, students will explore different ways of being on the planet. They will look at various types of experience and think about the essential questions of the project: What is beauty? Do we treat people differently based on their physical appearance? In order to answer these questions, students will explore historical and geographical perceptions of beauty. The students will use the class set of books to read about the thoughts, hopes, and fears of a boy who lives in a body that defies traditional ideals of beauty. They will engage in reading and writing activities that will help them see beauty in different ways, and in the process, the students will learn empathy inclusion and respect for difference.

In our 7th grade classroom, we focus on a peace-building and anti-bully curriculum.

Students have many opportunities to talk about racism, sexism, and classism. This unit allows students to explore physical beauty. This unit provides greater opportunities for students to learn more about themselves, their beliefs, their peers, and their community. Ultimately, this unit gives students a chance to develop empathy and hopefully, an expanded sense of the meaning of beauty.
