My Students
My students are 5th graders discovering what they are made of and how much they can offer the world. They are from low to middle income families, have diverse ethnicities, and many have learning disabilities ranging from ADD to autism.
They are absolutely my favorite age to teach.
When they walk through my door, my goal is how do I help that individual be the best they can be, and how do I prepare them for the change to come next year for middle school.
My Project
Wonder is a novel by R.J. Palacio that in my opinion, is the best modern day novel for 5th grade students. It is about a middle school boy with a physical deformity who constantly struggles to fit in. It reaches students from all walks of life with humor and valuable life lessons. The story connects with people on so many levels, and is great for adults too.
This project will be the start to the upcoming school year.
I know that the kids will fall in love with the characters, and learn valuable life lessons to take with them on their journey through middle school. In addition, this will give reluctant readers the desire to read. Many just need the right book, and I believe that this is it.
I already have a novel packet that I've put together to go with the books. This will allow students to build reading skills, and reflect on their reading along the way. If all goes well, students will be taking a trip to see the story on the big screen. Wonder, the movie is scheduled to come out this November.
