Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science has the ability to excite and amaze students. When students are engaged in a hands-on activity, they are learning without even realizing it! A typical day in my classroom involves students learning science while working together to solve problems.

I teach in an urban, magnet, Title I school with a diverse cultural population.

All students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. Despite life's challenges, my students exhibit a pride and passion for achievement. They are a resilient bunch who are hardworking and curious. Many of my students express their love for science class so I seek to maintain a classroom that provides unique STEM opportunities.

My Project

My students need STEM kits to engage in a series of engineering challenges during our WISE meetings throughout the year. The program is designed to include engineering challenges and traditional science lab experiences in chemistry, physics, and biology. The kits will help complete the engineering unit. They will allow students to work in groups to solve a problems.

The kits allow them to use their scientific knowledge and creativity to explore bubbles, chemical reactions, sound and motion in a tactile manner.

They will learn how to communicate, how to synthesize knowledge from different disciplines, and how to work with others. The kits will allow the environment of the lab to be one in which students are activity engaged in the process of learning.

The STEM challenges will offer unique enrichment opportunities for the students in WISE Club. Each day our school has an enrichment period where students can choose what activity they wish to participate in. The WISE Club seeks to motivate and excite students about science through unique experiences. It is a privilege to teach these students, and I simply hope I can provide valuable experiences for them that are both memorable and educational. For some of these students the WISE Club will be the springboard to their future pursuit of careers in science and engineering. Please help make this possible.
