Ranging in grades Kindergarten-5th, my students are a curious, creative, and diverse group of highly-capable learners. Unique in their learning styles and interests, they share a common love of discovery.
My students share an insatiable appetite for hands-on, inquiry-based explorations and thrive when faced with a challenge and allowed the freedom to create.
My students are split between two public elementary schools, one a K-5 school, and the other a K-2 school. I absolutely love my job, and am energized by my students every day!
My Project
Our Makerspace has become the creative hub of our school community. This is a space housed within our library where students can come during their lunch hour & on Friday afternoons to create in a student-centered environment. The centerpiece of our Makerspace is our 80" x 100" Epic LEGO Wall, but students also enjoy building with other hands-on, open-ended materials such as KEVA planks, wooden blocks, and Strawbees.
Our students need additional building materials to spark their imaginations and fuel their creative passions.
My 5th-grade group completed several coding activities throughout December of 2018. One of the Hour of Code activities resulted in our class earning a $100 gift card to Donor's Choose. Our class decided that they wanted to purchase materials that would benefit all 290 students at our K-5 school. Our Makerspace was the obvious answer!
We are excited about the prospect of bringing some well-loved classics into our Makerspace with sets of Tinkertoys, and Lincoln Logs. These wooden toys are a young engineer's dream come true! Creative Kid Flakes literally add a new twist to building with colorful plastic hexagons. All of these materials will be circulated within our Makerspace to keep things fun and exciting for our students.
Students don't often have the option during the school day to design, dream and build without adult directives. Our Makerspace gives students this sought after opportunity. Thank you for helping it grow!
