My Students

I teach 20 dedicated third graders with diverse needs in Utah. They are beginning third grade, and it's my first year teaching, so we're both in the same boat. Despite the complications of in-person learning during a pandemic, my students have been amazing. If you don't believe me, just stop by during math! Have you ever seen an eight-year-old jump for joy when they finally "get it"?

Third grade is a turning point for many students.

No longer classified as early childhood, they are given increasing independence. They tackle more difficult topics, taking the leap from additive to multiplicative thinking and facing the challenge of reading to learn. My students have mathematical and reading abilities ranging from kindergarten to seventh grade. I strive to meet their needs every day. This year, there is a necessary focus on social-emotional well-being, as we all get through this together.

My Project

Though third graders are entering the middle grades, they still wiggle like kids! These materials will help our class focus more on their work and less on how far they can tip back in their chair before they lose their balance. Fidgets are also included for students who feel more comfortable in your usual school chair, but need a bit more sensory feedback to be successful.

While normally, students would be able to simply choose a spot in the classroom to work, this is not a possibility due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This is why flexible at-the-desk seating is so important to me this year. Our classroom is not big enough to let everybody work away from their desk. This helps students feel so much more comfortable and productive, in their spot.
