We live in a rural community located in the northwest corner of Rhode Island. Our school is one of three elementary schools in the town, and is comprised of students in grades 2 - 5.
My students are seven and eight year old children who are excited about learning!
Students in my class come from different backgrounds. Some students come from families who are able to get the children involved in recreational sports programs, who are able to provide help with homework, who are able to go on vacations, etc. Other students live with single parents, in foster care, with grandparents, or in families who struggle to make ends meet. Several families also receive weekend bags of food, as well as help at Thanksgiving and Christmas for both food and gifts. Some students in my class have academic strengths in math while others have strengths in reading, writing, or science. For some students, academics are very difficult but they excel in sports, the arts, etc. Some students are outgoing and easily get along with others, while others tend to be shy and quiet and have difficulty making friends. Together we all make a diverse community of learners.
My Project
Kids today have a lot of energy and having them to come into a classroom and stay focused for several hours at a stretch is hard for many. Two years ago I was able to purchase four Kore Wobble Stools for my second graders and students have loved them and fought over them for two years. This is a good thing because I definitely saw an improvement with attention, participation, and overall student engagement when students were able to use them. I want to reach more of my students now by purchasing a few more stools, ultimately I'd like to have enough alternate seating for everyone to choose for themselves!
Kids don't realize all the benefits they're getting but are excited to sit in these cool seats rather than a boring regular chair.
Wobble Stools improve posture by encouraging active sitting and allowing students to easily change position. They also enable high-energy children to have an outlet through slight continuous movement. Even though students are sitting, this movement enables the right side of the brain which leads to better focus. Furthermore, Kore Wobble Stools helps students who are diagnosed with all forms of ADHD and Autism because they provide them with an outlet to move around without distracting other students.
I hope this explains why I'm determined to purchase more of these stools for my classroom. They're quite expensive and certainly not something in an ordinary budget, so I'd be very appreciative of any help and support! Thank you!
