My twenty-five students are a fun and energetic group of 5th graders from a small rural town in Pennsylvania. We are not a very racially diverse group, however many come from socioeconomically disadvantaged households. We try our best not to let that interfere with their learning. However, despite our hard work, many struggle with the very basics of reading and math, which is a skill they will need throughout the rest of their lives. Sitting still for any length of time is often difficult and hopefully moving more will help them remain focused and energized to be able to learn better.
My Project
During in service days I sit for long periods of time! These days remind me of how hard it is for my students to remain still everyday in my classroom. We do lots of brain breaks throughout each day, but let's be honest it's hard to sit still in a hard chair all day long.
These inflatable wobble cushions will be placed on students' seats.
They will be used as a wiggle seat to provide sensory input, and to help calm children that have a hard time sitting still. They will help my students to be able to move around a little more and be comfortable at the same time. They aren't huge (only 13 inches in diameter), so they won't take up a ton of room either.
I am only asking for 7 cushions and will plan on using them on an alternating basis so every student will get the chance to try them. When it is their turn for the cushion, they will have the cushion for the entire day.
I hope that moving more will help my students stay more energized and focused.
