Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade in a Title I elementary school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. My school is an amazing place to work because of our inspiring students and the community of teachers, parents, and neighbors that support them. Our school has a large population of English language learners with students from many diverse backgrounds. Numerous students are children of immigrants and many are immigrants themselves.

My students are bright, energetic, and hardworking.

They love to move, run, jump and play. Most importantly though, they love to read!

My Project

First grade is a crucial year for building reading skills, and the transition from kindergarten to first grade can be challenging for young students that need to move to keep their minds in focus. My goal is to start the new school year with flexible seating options to provide opportunities to meet my students’ individual needs and energy levels.

Flexible seating options can create a more welcoming, inclusive environment where students feel safe.

Not all of my students come from structured home environments and they depend and thrive on the stability and community they find in our classroom. With your help I can create comfortable and developmentally appropriate work spaces where students feel welcome and safe to grow into confident readers and independent thinkers. While sitting comfortably on floor cushions or with lap desks, students have opportunities to explore hands on learning and build communication skills. Wobble chairs and stability balls will help energetic learners improve focus and decrease behavior issues. I can’t wait for my new students to explore our updated classroom and get excited to come to school every day and “wobble with me”!
