My Students
Imagine having to sit inside of a small box and being expected not to move. The expectation is that you are to remain seated in your box for 6 hours but still do your job.
My students attend a Title 1 school in the eastern part of North Carolina.
Many of my students consider school to be their safe place. For some, school is their second home. A home should be comfortable but also have an environment where you can flourish and be successful.
My Project
When you think of a well-managed classroom you likely envision students sitting still and working quietly. The reality of what some may deem appropriate just doesn't fit well for all students.
It is very hard to expect a child to sit in a hard chair for several hours.
Children are naturally movers. In my classroom, we currently have stability balls for students to sit on while working at their desks. But, when they come to the small group table for intensive remediation, they have to sit in hard, boring chairs.
By adding wobble chairs to our small group area, students will be able to continue their active learning no matter where they are sitting in the classroom. Studies show that as children constantly move their body to maintain their balance, they are able to focus more easily. By increasing focus, students are able to retain more knowledge.
Who wouldn't want to be comfortable while learning? I know my students will be excited to be able to maintain their comfortable yet, engaging flexible seating no matter where they are in the classroom.
