Inside the four walls of my classroom, I have 24 wonderful fifth graders. Our school serves more than 60% of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Therefore, they bring different life experiences into the classroom each day. Socio-economic levels are drastically different from one student to another. Several of my students struggle to focus during direct instruction and sitting still for periods of time seem difficult. However, they all come to school eager to learn and grow. My classroom is filled with students who have varying academic needs. Several students have difficulty focusing during instruction and many need movement to stay on task.
Research states that students who are not reading on grade level by third grade are significantly less likely to graduate from high school.
Our school serves about 800 students, with my classroom being one of six for 5th grade. We are contained classrooms. Therefore my students are in the same desk all day, never switching classes.
My Project
Research shows that allowing students to sit in comfortable, flexible seating options greatly enhances their focus. With a fulfilled project, my classroom would change quite a bit. I would be able to offer my students to have some movement in the traditional classroom chair, but also make it a little more comfortable for them. I will also be able to allow students to sit in the stools, having them sitting better, which will help them focus more on the materials they are working on. These options will allow them to become more comfortable, find a responsible working space and get the most out of our work times and classroom activities.
My project will make a difference because student needs will be met.
My students will be able to work with a seating option that allows them to focus and stay comfortable. Both of which are needed to produce quality work. Everyone does not learn in the traditional chair fashion. Most adults have found ways that they work better in their jobs. While preparing our students for the future, giving them new seating options will help students make good decisions about their leaning. Each student should have that option.
