Ms. Richmond from Chicago IL is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students some flexible seating with wobble chairs which allows them stay seated, but also have some ability to move on the wobble stool while at their table or during free choice reading Friday time.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our school is located in the Armour Square neighborhood on the southeast side of Chicago. Our school has a rich history and culture where even two staff members have returned to join the staff after graduating as teachers.
My students, while culturally diverse (68 % Asian, 15% Black, 11% Hispanic and 6% White) are very inclusive and supportive of one another in the classroom.
My students are inquisitive by nature and really shine during science class when allowed to work in groups. Eighty percent of our school is considered low-income and forty-one percent are considered English language learners and so it is critical to have instructional materials and supports to help them be successful. With me as an advocate for them and proper supports, they can continue to succeed and flourish.
Staying focused in class can be a challenge when you struggle with staying still for long periods of time. This can make a typical day not very fun if you're forced to do something that maybe you can't help. Rather than have students take a quick walk around the room to refocus, I'd like to provide an option for staying seating, but allowing for some movement throughout the class period. In most of classes the addition of these stools would help students stay focused while letting them get out some of their energy.
Wobbling while working can really help students stay engaged with their group members while also meeting their need to move!
I am constantly working to ensure my classroom is inclusive for all learners and think this will help the room be more inclusive for others. I also think some students without excessive energy might enjoy the wobble chairs for time when they choose their own seating for free choice reading time.
