My school is a Title I school with a significant percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The mobility rate has always been high, but over the last five years it has increased dramatically. Our school is a safe haven where students are fed, clothed, and cared for above all else.
"The object of teaching a child is to enable him to get along without a teacher" (Elbert Hubbard).
This quote reflects my goal as a teacher, to create independent learners. Each morning, I am eagerly greeted by an amazing and diverse group of students, who come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Many of my students are struggling to cope with the multifaceted dilemmas of living in poverty.
Despite their obstacles, the one thing that I see in all their eyes is an eagerness to learn. They hang on every word I say and even beg to stay after school to do more work. My goal is to provide them with educational experiences that will sustain and promote this sense of curiosity and desire for lifelong learning.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to sit, stand, kick, fidget, twist, bounce, roll, kneel, and lean to complement how they learn best.
Flexible seating takes students out from behind rows of desks and lets them choose from a variety of seating options.
The more choices students have the more they will feel invested and responsible for their learning. When students are given choices, there is more excitement, greater engagement, and a higher desire to learn. Their effort increases and there is a certain amount of pride that comes out in their work. Physical benefits of flexible seating include increased metabolisms, increased oxygen flow to the brain, and improved core strength and posture.
This type of classroom ‘un-seating’ aims to create a learning environment that more truly reflects the nature of the hyper connected, ever-changing, globalized world that we now live in; a learning environment that inherently requires students to master skills such as flexibility, creativity, problem-solving and collaboration.
