My Students
I have the pleasure of teaching in a relatively new school on the far southeast side of Chicago. This year, I'm servicing about 100 3rd and 4th grade students in reading. Our school has a population of 95% Hispanic students with a high number of diverse learners. I have about 25/100 students who struggle to focus in class. 10 students have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. And through observation, other students who have not been diagnosed tend to struggle as well.
As a school, we believe in providing all students with the best supports in order to receive the best education.
Although our school is relatively new, there are still several things we need in order to provide our students with the ideal learning experience and flexible seating is one of them.
My Project
Improving my students' ability to focus in class has been my number priority this year. I teach 3rd and 4th grade reading. In these 2 grades, students are learning to build their reading and working stamina. Students are being introduced to longer texts, as well as complex and rigorous tasks. All of these things require the ability to focus. A donation of wobble chairs and balance ball will help students who constantly need movement. Instead of getting out of their seats frequently, they'll be able to move back and forth or bounce up and down while working. The focus bands will allow me to reach students who do not require as much movement but still need a little help. These donations will especially become useful during testing time. Some students are so hyper that they rush through their assessments and it makes it hard to measure their learning and determine the accuracy of their growth.
Students work best in an environment that encourages student ownership, choice, and individuality.
I teach my students to be independent and own their learning. In order to do so, they must move away from constant redirection from the teacher and learn to self-problem solve. My overall goal is for my students to have open access to any and everything they need in order to be successful. Thanks in advance for helping to provide my students with effective learning choices.
