My Students
It is impossible to educate the mind without involving the body. Learning is thinking and movement is integrated. My Kindergarten students love to move and learn. We incorporate movement throughout our entire day!
My students come from very diverse families.
Some struggle to make ends meet, while others are living with extended family until they find a home of their own. At my school, we have 85% of student receiving free and reduced lunch. Despite challenges that my Kindergartners face, they come to school excited and look forward to a place with consistency and stability. I want to help show my students that school can be a safe and fun learning environment for them.
My Project
If you walk into my classroom, you will see students working in every space of the room. My students are able to lay on a mat, stand at a table, or even recline in a bean bag. One thing missing from my room are chairs. My students have a hard time focusing while sitting in traditional chairs. They can't move in them! The Hokki stool is a wonderful seating tool that my wiggly students will be able to use. It will give them a change to wiggle and wobble without disrupting others, but it will still help them focus. I tell my students when they choose a place to work in the room, they should pick something that will help their 'big' muscles grow (including their brain!). The Hokki stool is just another example of helping their bodies move while they think.
Kindergarten has become a fast paced learning environment in the last 10-15 years.
Students are expected to do more every year. They sometimes have unrealistic expectations thrust upon them. Alternative seating in my classroom, is my way to help give my students a break from traditional learning. The Hokki chair is just another way for my students to get a break from having to sit still when their little bodies just aren't ready for that yet.
