"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children
I am fortunate in that I am an Occupational Therapist and I work in multiple schools with all of the students that attend that school.
I work with a range of students from children who have significant needs and disabilities to students who participate in a general education classroom only. For some students sitting still during a teacher's verbal instruction is a real challenge.
My Project
In many classrooms students are expected to sit for long periods of time listening to class lectures or instructions. For many students this presents a challenge. Students with low tone or weak core muscles begin to feel more exhausted sitting in an upright chair. Students with inattentive and active tendencies begin to get in trouble because they move around and find other things to do during class time. With a wobble stool both these types of students are given a tool to help them attend, focus and stay alert during class time. This alternative to a typical classroom chair provides them with the resource they need to learn in a typical classroom setting without getting pulled from their peers for motor breaks and exercise.
If my students were able to maintain their classroom environment for longer periods of time with the help of a wobble stool they can learn, engage and develop more together with their peers.
The wobble stool will eliminate the disruptions in class and help all children to maintain better focus and attention.
