Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kids. People often get confused when I start to talk about my students because I call them my kids. It's not just that we spend hours together every weekday, it's what happens during those hours.
We are a close-knit community that celebrates each others' successes.
However, our school is in a socio-economically disadvantaged area. Our school provides free breakfast and lunch to all of the students. Additionally, over 80% of the students are of Hispanic heritage, so more than half of our students are English Language Learners. The more tools that we can give them, the more likely it is that they will be successful.
My "kids" are active learners, who do best when I can give them hands-on, meaningful experiences. My lessons are always more successful when I can engage their body and mind at the same time.
My Project
The Wobble Cushions will be used every school day to allow the students movement in their desk chair or on the floor, while remaining focused on their learning.
The Wobble Cushions are perfect for our classroom community because the students will be able to take them with them as they move to centers and other cooperative group activities throughout the day.
Some of our centers are on the floor, so this will also give them something to sit on other than the hard, classroom floor.
Besides PE., my students and I often do "brain breaks", where we get up to stretch, play brief movement games, dance, and the like. The Wobble Cushions will give us more options and allow us to do some of these breaks more comfortably, especially when we utilize the floor.
The Bouncy Bands will be for my students with special movement needs. Every year, I have students with ADHD or other emotional needs, that these bands could aide. It will help to keep their bodies busy, so their minds can be more at rest, and ready for learning.
