My students need more options of flexible seating to provide choice and support focus in order to better engage in being accountable for their learning!
"I love learning!" This statement is what I hear multiple times throughout the week. Many of my students come to school as an escape from their daily lives. We live in a high poverty area with many students in desperate need for attention, support, and motivation. In addition to poverty, my students are challenged each day by their disabilities. Being in a 12:1:1 special education classroom, my students must persevere through obstacles that don't necessarily affect the typical learner or peer.
With our hands-on projects and activities within the classroom, students are able to use kinesthetic learning to achieve the standards and, most importantly, love what they are learning.
My students are able to use their strengths to help one another's weaknesses in order to accomplish the task. Through this collaboration, my students define what a team should be. To have this team environment, it is no wonder why they are motivated to do their best and love what they are doing.
My Project
My students come to me each day to make it a great day! Every morning, they get to unpack their folders and agendas in order to set forth to claim the best seat in the house for their learning that day! With their name tags velcroed to their spots, they make the choice to be accountable for their learning opportunities for that day. Currently, my students are able to choose from typical chairs, rolling chairs, or floor pillows. Wobble chairs would be an amazing additional choice for many of my students as we have a high number of kids diagnosed with ADHD. With this new seating option, my students will be able to move while they stay seated! This will make such an impact as students will need less frequent movement breaks (at times, these breaks hinder easy transitions back to learning) and will increase retention since they will better focus on what concept is taught instead of being uncomfortable in their seat. Being able to focus and retain information will increase my students' self-esteem and confidence in their perception of themselves as students!
