My Students

I currently teach kindergarten at a rural elementary school that serves students from Head Start through fifth grade. Our school is in a rural area of our county and is extremely diverse in socio- economic situations. Our school is a Title I school with an high percentage of free or reduced meals. Just like my school, our classroom is similar in diversity.

My students come to me from a wide range of previous exposure to academics and family situations.

I try to implement options to our diverse classroom that allows me to meet their academic needs by being more brain compatible. Students come to kindergarten so diverse in developmental levels and academic exposure. It can be a challenge to meet all of their widely diverse needs.

My Project

Adding flexible seating to a classroom allows me to meet a student's academic needs by being more brain compatible. Students come to kindergarten eager to learn, and I want to build an environment in which all types of learners can thrive. It can be challenging to meet various emotional and developmental needs, and this is where I have found success with flexible seating. Unfortunately, flexible seating is expensive. This is why I would like to start out smaller and build my flexible seating options.

Brain research shows that movement and exercise increased blood flow in the brain, which improves attention, memorization, and coping skills.

I have found so much success with the use of wobble chairs in my classroom, I am eager to add more chairs to our room. Students are able to get out their extra energy while working at the same time. With the increasingly difficult academic standards set for our youngest learners, students more then ever need a way to get out their energy while still staying on top of academic requirements.
