My students need keyboard, headphones, and music books in order to learn to read and play the piano. We already have 12 keyboards and stands. The items here are needed to complete a class set.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at our school are mostly of Chinese and Hispanic descent. Our school has a large English as a Second Language, and English as a New Language population. Music is a great way for them to connect and to express themselves. We aim to offer and teach the students what they may not have access to outside of the school. Learning to play an instrument teaches focus, discipline, and confidence. Playing in an ensemble teaches cooperation and compromise. Thinking long term, learning to read, write, and play music opens the door for scholarships and careers down the road.
My Project
When we asked the students what instruments they would most like to learn to play, an overwhelming majority of the students said they wish they knew how to play the piano and the ukulele.
Most of the classes have 32 children in them.
In the music room we have 26 ukuleles and 12 pianos with stands. I created this Donorschoose project to help us obtain enough ukuleles so that every child can play at the same time (plus a few extra for when some inevitably break). In order for students to be 2 to a keyboard we need 3 more keyboards. The headphones are so that children can practice and play at the same time hearing only their keyboard. The books are for them to learn to read and gradually get harder in their level of reading notated music. The laminating pouches are for when we have to make copies of sheet music and give them to students. If we laminate it, it will keep from tearing. The guitar hooks are because we have several guitars laying on shelving units in our closet. Shelving units where the keyboards will need to be stored so we want to hang the guitars on the wall to make more room for keyboard storage.
