I'm moving to a new school, and starting a new grade. My new school is newly Title One, since last Sept/Oct. We have the preschool room (tiny) with no A/C and 32 small children. Let's hope that hands on, exciting math ideas via Singapore Math with make it all fade into the murals on the walls!
The students at my school are almost identical to the California averages of all nationalities in schools.
We are a small quiet school behind in technology (which I hope to change) and quietly sneaking under the radar all too often. After becoming Title One, the students did make great growth when focus was put into the right areas for them. My hope is to make this a successful year for the Kindergartens coming into my room and to give them a boost that will last throughout their school careers.
My Project
I'm hoping to use the lap boards for total participation in the classroom. The kids will use their boards to answer TOGETHER and think through each topic on their own. I am trying to stay away from one student raising their hand with the answer all the time. The math counters are for the math activities I've learned through Singapore Math. It uses number combinations to help students to become so familiar with numbers 1 to 10 in Kindergarten so that it is internalized and as they move up adding numbers will become second nature. What is a 4? 3 red and 1 blue, 2 yellow and 2 red, and this will be done using multiple activities solidifying the knowledge. Also, it's fun! Making numbers with cars, bugs, spots on the bear, cubes, cups up and cups down, legs on an animal, etc.
I know that young kids are so ready when they arrive at school.
Who am I not to be ready? I want to give them the tools they need to keep them on the cutting edge. Building numbers, conservation of number, is a raw element to their future math success, especially their ability to use mental math.
