Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school serves over 750 kindergarten through 8th grade students and over 57% of them are identified as being at the poverty level. We are located directly outside the gates of a major USAF base in Florida. So, though we are not a military school, over 80% of our children come from a military family. Our students are dropped off early and picked up late. Many have one or both parents deployed at numerous times during the school year. The majority of our children are required to attend daycare before and after school, as mom or dad is deployed, and the other parent is working a full time job as well. There are essentially very few homes that have a stay-at-home parent. These families, and specifically, these students have the odds stacked against them. Unfortunately, school is not always a priority; surviving day-to-day with one parent is. Our student population is also very transient. We have many families that move from school to school in our district, based on where they can find a roof to put over their heads.

My Project

Through the use of technology, my students work every day to improve their abilities in Mathematics. They set goals and strive to obtain them. Unfortunately, the location of their remedial math class does not have a computer that can access their online lessons, their goals or their progress.

A laptop would enable each student to work with the teacher to view online lessons, data, and goals; thereby helping guide them to success in the STEM areas!

Empowering students to grow in the STEM areas not only makes a difference in their lives here and now, but makes a huge impact on the level of success that they may obtain in the future!
