Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students attend a Title I school in Carson, CA, where students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. They are respectful, kind and self-motivated students with moderate to severe disabilities. Their disabilities range from Autism, Intellectually Disabled and Multiple Disabilities Orthopedic.
My goal is to create opportunities for growth and to inspire with love at the root.
Despite academic, social or physical challenges faced, my students maintain a positive outlook and encourage each other to thrive. Their willingness to attempt different opportunities inspires me the most!
My Project
Our focus for this school year is on maintaining our already limited garden and on expanding it by growing different fruits and vegetables. My students need specific hand tools to pull out weeds, turn the soil and dig for planting different seeds. This hands-on approach will help my students with disabilities grow their own vegetables and hopefully when harvested, use them to cook a simple meal.
Sustaining a school garden requires a tremendous amount of labor but my students are willing to place the effort in hopes of seeing their garden grow nutritious foods.
In addition to the fruits and vegetables, they are also looking forward to growing plants that will attract butterflies! With your contribution, my students can participate in creating and sustaining a school garden.
