My Project

With Kind Words We Can Create Text-Based Art is a printmaking project, re-envisioned as an opportunity for children at our Title I School to explore social and emotional learning supported by research and practice-based evidence.

The rapidly changing dynamics of art education require new ways for students to participate in art-making and to consider how educators may provide students with an opportunity to explore how we are impacted by kind words as part of CASEL’s 5 Elements.

The purpose of the With Kind Words printmaking project is to provide students with an art-making opportunity to explore printmaking and their vision of Words of Kindness as a means of exploring kindness, social, and emotional learning.

Increasingly, my students have been faced with unthinkable challenges and trauma. This project will introduce children to the process of printmaking while allowing students to think about using kind words, and at the same time providing an opportunity for them to respond to their thoughts about the As part of this project we are focused on “establishing safe spaces for expression” (NAEA Mission and Vision) by allowing children to think about, write, and printmake about kindness. The kindness printmaking lesson was inspired by trauma, education, and social-emotional learning (SEL) research. The process of printing words of kindness allows students to learn the basic techniques of printmaking grounded in the Standards while at the same time, children will have an opportunity to respond to their life experiences as expressed by kindness they have experienced, thus establishing safe spaces for expression” (NAEA Mission and Vision)

Students will learn about using a variety of sources for ideas, articulating their words of kindness and revising their artwork as a necessary part of the creative process, and articulating personal artistic and aesthetic choices to tell their own kindness story.
