Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 22 students attend a Title 1 school and are all learning English as a second language. Although their community is characterized as underserved, my students come to school with positive energy and are excited to learn to speak and read in English!
It is astonishing to see how thirsty they are to read new books with great stories.
They also love creating their own stories and are super curious about math! My students enjoy coming to school every day. I try and make learning fun throughout the year, so they continue to have a positive school experience!
My Project
Shared reading is a very effective way to model and practice reading and a great way for students to build language. This is especially important for my class, which consists of entirely English Language Learners. Teachers and students work together to problem-solve using big books and other types of texts.
An easel allows for a great space to place big books to be read together as a class.
The easel will not only be used for students to gather to read, but also a great place to see writing modeled or to practice writing on their own. The easel also provides storage for posters and charts to be used by students during independent time. The books in this project will be used along with the easel during shared reading.
