I have a very diverse group of students each year who come from all areas of Chicago and are very eager to learn. Our school has open-concept classrooms so we are in a large room with five other third-grade classrooms. This very unique setting provides us so much opportunity to share and collaborate, however, at times, it can become very noisy! I incorporate a variety of seating options throughout the day such as small groups or partner seating. Often times, they are allowed to spread out around the room and work.
One very important aspect of our day is being able to gather together on the "carpet" whether it be for instruction, to give directions or to share ideas.
Gathering on the carpet provides my students a place to really focus when I teach or talk to them since it can become quite noisy at times, like I mentioned. They are truly an incredible group, and I am so lucky and thankful to have a new group of learners that are excited and ready to learn each year!
My Project
Having a nice carpet to sit on will really make a difference in my students learning. I teach in an open-concept classroom, which means I have five other third-grade classes in the same room (totaling around 180 students!!). I'm sure you can imagine that it can become noisy at times! Having my students gather together on the carpet allows them to really focus on what I am teaching or instructions I am giving. It also allows us a space where we can hear each other when students want to share ideas and information. I also allow my students to work around the room at certain times, and the carpet will allow them a comfortable opportunity to do so that will enhance my classroom for many years to come.
