My students love to experience new things. They come from various backgrounds but they all share the love of learning. With various backgrounds come a variety of experiences which the students come to school with.
My school is a true neighborhood school.
All students live within a 2-mile radius of the school. Some walk, ride bikes, skateboard, or get dropped off by car. Approximately 25% of the students come from military families. We have an Anchor for Life program at our school to help the transition for military students moving. We also have 50% of the students coming from low-income families.
My Project
I already know where these books will go! Right into the hands of my students. These books are directly off their wishlist of books that they want to read. I have promised them that I would find a way to get these books into their hands. I can only borrow so many books from various teachers without it taking away from their students.
I love when they have found a series that they are extremely interested in but very disappointed when I don't have the books.
My students want to read more but are being held back by the lack of higher level books within my room. My job as a teacher is to help them excel and encourage them to work to their fullest potential. I will do anything it takes to help them reach that full potential.
Each month we ask the students to read 80,000 words. They can challenge themselves and double that amount to 160,000 words for reward lunches. The goal is to read 1 million words this school year. Research has shown that kids who read 1 million words show growth. The book series that I have selected, for example The Last Kids on Earth series and the Hilo series, will allow them to accomplish this task. Many of my current books have already been read by them so we need to freshen up our class library to help them keep growing.
