Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are 3rd graders. We are a largely Hispanic, rural, low-income population with many English as a Second Language (ESL) learners, who are respectful, responsible, and awesome. We are an intellectual community made up of creative thinkers, readers, dreamers, questioners, and explorers.
From the moment we walk in the door, we are making connections, exchanging ideas, forming opinions, and filling our hearts with the love of learning, and acceptance of each other's uniqueness.
We see links between the stories we read, poems we have chanted, and our social studies lessons, connecting us to our world.
Our vibrant classroom is a creative, stimulating, safe learning environment, where we contribute to discussions respectfully raising brave hands, where pair share dialogue is exchanged throughout the day, where we write ideas in our Think Book Journals, and where we accept and value each other. Kindness, acceptance, risk-taking, and calmness are part of who we are.
My Project
DonorsChoose.org has recently provided an owl project for my students, where we are already studying owl pellets and the owl’s adaptations. We are exstatic about starting the new year learning more about owls.
This additional literacy project will provide my students with more resources to enhance their knowledge of this wise and interesting creature.
With this project, we will use the many books and listen to the CD, working on comprehension and fluency. We will incorporate drama using the owl puppet, which will especially assist my EL learners. We will learn more about what this bird of prey is capable of and how it is vital to our world. We will also read fiction, using Arnold Lobel’s books in small group centers, and we will study how the owl is portrayed, studying character traits. We will also create a second animal report on owls, and each student will research a different kind of owl, sharing what they learned in an oral report to the class.
