This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am creating a series of projects that will provide materials to have an outdoor curriculum which focuses on using our gardens and playground in different ways throughout our beautiful Wisconsin seasons. The books included in this project started with a winter theme, which led to Caldecott award winners, which led to a book called What Do You Do With an Idea?

Which brings me full circle to the outdoor curriculum, how magical is that!

I started this project with the idea of winter. The children do not get to go outside a lot in the wintertime because they do not have the appropriate clothes. My class now has rainboots, so I am requesting wool socks to be worn in the rainboots over the children's socks they wear to school. I am also requesting waterproof mittens to keep their hands dry. We always have extra coats and hats, so I think we can be pretty toasty warm to go outside. Many of my students have never been sledding. We frequently can not go outside when it snows because the children previously did not have boots. That problem will be solved with the rainboots and woolen socks. On to the sleds! I have requested 12 sleds, so the children can be partners taking turns being a puller and a rider. It will make for a great team building exercise.

Next are the birds! I have chosen birds that are native to Wisconsin to add to our array of animals that we will be using for literacy extensions to our garden library. I'm excited to bring the children outdoor seasonal activities that will teach them about the nature in our state. These experiences will add to our journal writing, vocabulary and science activities, as well as contribute to our social emotional learning!
