Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science and Intro to Programming to high school seniors. My students have responded really well to the curriculum and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 4 years.

In my AP CS course last year, we doubled enrollment to two full sections.

Seeing people that my students can connect with represented in my physical classroom space and curriculum is key. Last year we celebrated that 66% of my students who took my AP CS class identify as female, 71% identify as Hispanic/Latinx, 26% identify as Black, and 3% identify as Asian. In my curriculum, we are focusing on social justice in tech, what it means to be a digital citizen and what the inalienable rights of digital citizens should be.

In my Intro to Programming elective, my students learn JavaScript and how to draw and animate on the computer, culminating in an animated short film festival, in the winter. My students also learn HTML & CSS in the Spring and create dynamic web pages using adobe creative suite and other web builders.

My Project

Currently, with students regularly quarantining with positive covid cases, I am trying to ensure there are robust educational video supports available for when they have to work from home. I am regularly recording educational videos on my computer illustrating computer science concepts, but as I have to record these during the work day in my classroom, there is regularly ambient and distracting noise in the background of my recordings. These AirPods will enable me to get cleaner audio recordings in these videos for supporting all learners. These support videos have also been very helpful for my students with IEPs as they can revisit lessons and explore them at their own pace, and use the closed captioning feature as well.

I have also recently acquired a bluetooth speaker system for lectures and presentations in my class, and the microphone from these AirPods will be linked and help project out my voice across the room.

This will be a welcome relief while having to talk through a KN95 mask, thus enabling students to hear me better and be able to participate more regularly and ultimately more easily understand computer science content and concepts.
