This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My elementary school serves approximately 319 students, 100% of whom live at or below state/federal poverty level. Of our 319 students, approximately 30% of them are eligible and receive special education services. These services are all encompassing, occurring both in and out of the classroom.
Given our low socioeconomic status and ever growing list of needed resources, I am seeking financial help to provide a much needed technology component for our students to make their standardized testing procedures more palatable.
These kids are amazing and have already improved our school's overall test scores SIGNIFICANTLY over the past 2 years. I'd like to give them the ability to "point and click" a little more easily when they take their state exams this spring.
Each of our students has access to a Chromebook for web-based testing. However, we do not have "mice" for these units, which makes the usability a bit trickier, especially for elementary aged children. At this time, state assessments are required of 3rd-5th grades, which is roughly 135 of our school population. I aim to collect $1583.05 to provide a simple wireless and noiseless mice for these deserving kids.
Everything about state testing is no fun. These wireless, noiseless mice will take the added stress of having to know how to "point, click" and "drag" without a mouse off of students who already struggle in a test situation due to their learning challenges.
The mice I chose are inexpensive yet reliable, are easily cleaned and maintained with regular batteries, and are noiseless by design to eliminate distracting sounds during test time.
They are also slim for small hands (these are for kids, afterall!) and can be easily stored when not in use. Overall, they're very user friendly!
Students were recently given a survey following practice testing to assess likes/dislikes with the testing procedure/setting. Quite a few students referenced difficulty manipulating the touchpad on their devices. This project would offer a simple and inexpensive solution to that problem.
