My school is located in a rural community. We are one of the poorest elementary schools in the district. We are a Title I school with approximately 500 students. Through a government-subsidized program, all of my students receive free lunch and free breakfast. Our attendance zone includes a domestic violence safe house, so for some students, school is the most reliable constant in their lives.
Because of the low socio-economic standing of our community, our kids go without things other schools consider standard.
My Project
Believe it or not, many of my students don't have their own earbuds. You may be wondering why the music teacher is concerned about this. The reason I am requesting earbud headphones is that I have a keyboard lab in my classroom and my students love playing the keyboards. While sanitizing the keys between classes is relatively easy, headphones are another story. This year students have to bring their own earbuds in order to play my keyboards.
If students need earbuds for music class, they also need them for remote learning!
My school is currently face to face 4 days a week and virtual one day a week to allow for cleaning. This project will provide an essential piece for students who don't have the means to get their own earbuds. Because I see every student from Kindergarten through 5th grade, these earbuds will supply 50 children with much needed sound.
When students have earbuds for remote learning, they can be much more focused on the lessons and not so easily distracted. Seeing children denied access to playing the keyboards because they lack earbuds breaks my heart. You can help level the playing field in this one area.
