My Project
Our students are eager to learn how technology and agriculture can work together to solve real-world problems and we’re ready to grow that curiosity into something tangible. This project will allow them to build and program a microchip-controlled hydroponic system using Micro:bits, combining hands-on STEM learning with sustainability, innovation, and coding.
This project gives students the power to code something that grows.
With Micro:bit Club Kits, students will learn to write block- or text-based code that controls sensors, lights, and water pumps. They’ll collect and analyze real-time data, make decisions based on feedback, and connect programming to plant biology. The vertical 25-pod hydroponic growing system will act as their testbed for applying that knowledge, giving students experience with food production technology used in urban farms and space missions. The Carolina Hydroponics Kit brings essential background knowledge and guided experiments that tie together biology and engineering. Seedling heat mats, organic sponges, and growing plugs ensure successful germination and plant health throughout the process, letting students focus on testing and refining their system.
Anderson 3 students are problem-solvers and deep thinkers, even when resources are limited. They come from a rural community where many have firsthand experience with farming and food access challenges. This project honors their roots while showing them how STEM can help shape a more sustainable future. Through this work, they’ll not only grow plants—they’ll grow confidence, collaboration, and curiosity.
