Wire is Line That Wanders in 3 Dimensions!

My students need wire and wire tools to bridge the gap between paper and clay with 3-dimensional explorations which reward planning and experimentation.

My Students

My students are very smart, curious, and demonstrate great grit! They are warm, laugh a lot, and work together with enthusiasm. They do their best with what they have. Most have little in terms of material possessions; a few are homeless. My 650 art students would benefit greatly from a wider variety of materials which would allow for a much greater range of visual arts exploration.

My students need wire, wire tools, and safety glasses to enable an exciting, forgiving and flexible way to delve into 3-dimensional artwork before we tackle clay in the next quarter.

Wire encourages experimentation and play. Wire can be formed and reformed, facilitating a process of construction, evaluation, and revision essential to any creative endeavor.

Part of what we strive to do as art teachers is develop the ability to brainstorm and take time to make ideas into something solid. Wire is a perfect tool to help children value the time they spend planning, because they see their idea go from mind to paper to sculpture and transform into something beautiful as it does!

My Project

It's hard to exaggerate how many ways we can use wire, and the breadth of skills and ideas students can come away with if they are able to use such a great material!

Elementary students love working in three dimensions, and their excitement motivates them to approach challenges with patience and persistence.

My students will dip into engineering by balancing wire and shapes in a Calder-style mobile. We can "defy" gravity with art that uses wind in the style of George Rickey. They will make apertures to support paper-mache creations with geometric edges. They will use scientific observation to create insect sculptures. They will use wire in relief sculptures showing fossils. They will observe and use proportions to make human sculptures in motion.

We really appreciate your generosity!
