My students need personal white boards, erasers, and dry erase markers so they can work out challenging math problems individually while simultaneously sharing with the class.

My Students
Math is an area that many of my students struggle with. This is why I am filled with such pride as we near the end of the year because they have worked so diligently to sharpen their skills and raise their scores. I believe there is another path to math education I can explore with them, however.
My school is located in a very low socio-economic status neighborhood.
The kids have to deal with many things on a daily basis that many of us have only seen in movies or read about in books. We are at 97% free-and-reduced lunch, so there are many things my students cannot afford to buy on their own. Paper and those types of supplies are some of them.
This project will give me the ability to work out math problems with them without the use of paper--the white boards I will have can be used by any student at any time. While these white boards will not eliminate the need for paper and pencils, it will lessen greatly the anxiety that many of my low SES students feel when they have to come to school without these important supplies.
My Project
I would like to get a class set of white boards, colored markers, black markers, and erasers so that I can explore math with my students in a different way. My students have worked out math problems with pencil and paper their entire lives. I think it would be wonderful to show them that they can do math with colored markers and white boards. Not only will this help my students to become more environmentally conscious--no paper means saving trees--it will also raise the FUN level of our math time!
We will use these white boards for math games, figuring out problems, working individually, and working as a whole group. In other words, this project will help my students gain a greater affinity for a vital subject.
I believe that it is important to explore traditional subjects with different approaches as much as possible.
Doing so helps students to see old things in new ways and can engage them as never before. Using white boards and colorful markers to work math problems is not revolutionary--but it is fun! Combining fun and education is never a bad thing.
