My school is located in a very low socio-economic status neighborhood. The kids have to deal with many things on a daily basis that many of us have only seen in movies or read about in books. We are at 97% free-and-reduced lunch, so books are not often things my students can afford to buy on their own. Despite all of these obstacles in their lives, I have students who find a way to succeed. They may not have the calmest or quietest of reading atmospheres at home, but they fight through the distractions to meet the reading goals I set out for them each and every week. They are always asking to borrow books from me. I want to augment my classroom library with these amazing and imagination-capturing novels so my kids are clamoring to do something that other students might try to avoid--READ!
