Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach in an old school and every single morning, the first thing I do is wipe down a layer of dust from desks, shelves, etc., just so my students can start their day in a halfway clean space. No matter how much I clean, it always comes back. I’m doing everything I can to keep things safe, but it’s hard to keep up with it all when I’m also trying to handle everything else that comes with teaching.
Most of my students live in poverty.
Many come to school without basic supplies. Some don't have that fit. Some are dealing with things no child should ever have to face. And yet—they show up. They try and work hard. without complaint.
My students are amazing, curious, motivated, and full of potential. They deserve to learn in a space that is clean all the time. The dust in my classroom triggers allergies and asthma in several of my students. I’ve seen kids trying to focus while wiping their eyes, sneezing nonstop, or struggling to breathe comfortably. It’s heartbreaking, and it’s not fair. That’s why I’m asking for help. I’m requesting an air purifier (with filters), cleaning supplies like disinfecting wipes, and some new books for our classroom library. I’m asking for basic things to help create a clean, healthy space where my kids can focus and feel comfortable. My students already face enough challenges in life. They shouldn’t have to deal with coughing fits or itchy eyes while they’re trying to read or learn math.
