Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year in our first grade classroom we have a woodland theme: raccoons, deer, squirrels, owls and even gnomes! I will be sending a bag home with students over the winter break and encouraging them to write about what they are doing with their families. Each student will receive a cuddly gnome to write about and a book to write in (with a special pencil).

This project will continue to support students' creativity and curiosity by inspiring them to learn more about woodland creatures and to write nonfiction texts.

Once we are back in the classroom in January, we will begin our study of nonfiction texts and the conventions of nonfiction writing. Students will research different woodland creatures using nonfiction books at their reading level, and then will learn to write a structured text about what they have learned.

An array of whimsical gnomes will inspire their work in the classroom and stickers will reward them for their dedication.
