The students at my high school are like family. Many have gone to school here since they were in kindergarten.
Over half of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch, so money is tight for many; however, they make up for it in determination.
We have a strong group of 21st-century scholars and, last year, we were recognized by the Indiana Department of Education for FAFSA completion. I am in my 20th year as the school counselor. Several of my junior high students are children of former students, which is really fun. In addition to serving as the school counseling director, I also teach a dual credit sociology class and a communications class. We have enough dual credit offerings that my students can get one year of college done while in high school.
I'm sleeping on the couch, we cannot pay the heat bill, the wind comes through the crack, I hate winter- these are comments that school counselors here from students. Please help me to provide some comfort and warmth to my chilly children. I need blankets, hand warmers and some space heater to send home to needy families. It is hard for students to concentrate on their studies when they are cold or when they cannot sleep at night due to low temperatures. Our community has limited resources to help families. I run the school food pantry and can take care of their food needs, please consider helping me keep some children warm this winter.
