This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love art. However, for the past few years they have had to use broken pastel pieces and near empty watercolor sets. The new art supplies will allow my students to fuel their imaginations and create beautiful art projects.

I have a wonderful class of second graders.

Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in the family to finish high school and hopefully college too. Most of my students are English learners and I have several students with learning disabilities too. I also mainstream special education students into my all inclusive classroom.

My Project

These art supplies will be used to create amazing art projects in my classroom to go along with our science and language arts curriculum. My students will study animal and plant life cycles this year. As part of these thematic units, I'd like my students to learn about the four seasons and how they affect the animal and plant life cycles. I'm asking for three pop-up books about the fall, winter, and spring seasons along with two books about the summer season. I'm also asking for a class pack of watercolor pencils and 12 sets of watercolor pastels.

During each season of the year I will read the pop-up/ picture book that goes with that season and then my students will use the art materials to depict something they like about that season.

After my students draw their picture, I will give them wet Q-tips to turn their pictures into beautiful watercolors. These amazing pictures will proudly be displayed in the hallway for everyone to see. I will repeat this process as I introduce the new seasons throughout the year. I'm sure my students will be very proud of their finished masterpieces, and they will treasure them forever!

This project will allow my students to use the information they learn about the seasons to create amazing art projects.

It will enable my students to go beyond just reading the material in their science and reading books. These supplies such as oil pastels, paper, and chart will enrich my curriculum and allow my students to use their creativity and become excited about what they are learning! I hope this project inspires my students to stay in school and pursue careers in science and art.
