My students want to succeed and are excited to learn. When asked to describe their ideal classroom the words community, safety, respect, and fun were written down. These are students that know what it takes to be part of successful learning environment.
My students come to school knowing this a safe place where they can feel part of a caring community.
We live in a small mountain town and don't have access to many conveniences that cities and suburbs share. There's no malls or museums. It can be isolating, but within our classroom students get to come together to support each other and build dreams that go beyond our small town.
My school is a part of a two way Spanish immersion program. Most of our families are Spanish speakers and qualify for free or reduced lunches. We don't always have the parent involvement most educators dream of; however, we all share the same goal to create a safe and caring community where our children can succeed in learning by closing the achievement and opportunity gap.
Here in South Lake Tahoe we are fully in the winter season, and are ready for a new winter read aloud! A classroom set of the novel Stone Fox will enable each of my students to have their own copy of the book. We will be reading this book together as a class and in literacy circles. This activity will help my students build their reading fluency and allow my struggling readers to access a more complex text in a supported way. Our "read aloud" time is a favorite activity for most of my students. Its a time to relax and just enjoy a great book.
