Winter Nourishment for Hungry Minds and Bodies

We need two Keurig hot beverage makers for our Wellness Center at our school. Students come to school with empty bellies which lead to empty minds. Warmth is nourishing.

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Thomas's classroom raised $499

About My Students

Students will serve as beverage makers for those who want to warm up after coming to school on chilly winter days. These students can also offer a kind word, help with homework and provide a quiet setting to prepare for the day ahead. This can make students feel welcome and gain focus for the day.

The students want to lead a movement to change the lives of others. They already have developed a peer mentoring program and a conflict resolution plan to build positive relationships among students. Having a place to get a warm beverage and some warm words is necessary to build the self esteem of individual pupils. Students always respond well to help when it is offered in a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. Students also want to have an area where families can solve problems and create connections with others in the neighborhood.

Students who are involved in this project will improve many skills in academic, social and collegiate areas. Students can work together to help solve personal conflicts and issues among the student body. These young men and ladies can build strong ties to the community and to institutions of higher learning. In addition, they can tutor younger students in this "Friendship Cafe" where students can get a warm beverage and warm feelings built towards others. Many issues can be solved through peer mediation sessions and a warm cup of hot chocolate. It is a winning combination to get students together.

In Their Own Words

We are part of a team to help younger students in our school. Most of us are seniors, and we have lived through the trouble and turmoil of life in our school and neighborhood. Our experiences have allowed us to learn about life and teach lessons to others in similar situations. The goal is to bring all school community members together as one to build a positive educational environment.

We have many teachers who help facilitate our group, but we are the ones in charge of our specially designed "Friendship Cafe". We have certain students who are leaders in charge while others are leaders in community relations, student outreach and administrator partnerships. The leadership opportunities here are numerous, and it will allow us to grow as community leaders. We are the future citizens of our city and country, so there is a lot to learn in life.

Our community is full of difficult challenges such as poverty, crime, absent parents, teen pregnancy and poor health. Our "Friendship Cafe" will be an oasis among these difficult challenges we face on a daily basis. It is necessary to have a safe zone in our school where students who have problems, conflicts or emotional issues can get together in a non-threatening environment. Teachers call this time period a chat and chew where members can solve issues over a cup of warmth.
