This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in the heart of Atlanta, where 100 percent of my students receive free or reduced federal funding. Many of my students homeless or live with relatives and parents who often lack the resources needed to provide daily essentials.
Many students overcome extreme conditions at home, but still report to school eager to perform in the classroom and participate in programs offered before and after school.
My students are innovative, creative, eager and ready to explore the world. These children come to school every day with an amazing sense of curiosity, and it truly drives me to do all that I can to teach them and help them reach their full potential.
My Project
Most of my students are walkers and bus riders, and now that winter is here, I see a huge need for basic essentials like winter hats, gloves and warm socks. On days when it is extremely cold or rainy students without these clothing essentials may not make it to school. Missing school due to a lack of warm, dry clothing only sets the student further behind in their academics.
My students need to be cold weather prepared.
We can often take for granted that parents have the resources to purchase these items. Studies show that nearly one in five children live in poverty across the U.S. When a family of four makes less than $25,000 a year, deciding between housing, food, heat and healthcare takes priority, and children may have to go without the winter essentials during the cold winter months.
