This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Welcome to first grade! I have twenty-four wonderful students who are eager to learn. They are curious and devour all the information they are learning. They are learning to work as teams, respect each other and keep a peaceful classroom so they can all learn. My students are 6- and 7 years old. Sometimes they cry because they miss their mothers and other family members.

I have a mother who just told me she has stage 3 breast cancer, and that she is still invested in her child's academic performance.

I would like to be able to create a safe space for my students' families to come in to our school and work together alongside their children. I want them not only to learn and perform well academically, but also create memories with their family.

My Project

Parents and families have the most direct and lasting impact on children's learning and social development. I want to be able to include my students' families in our learning.

When parents are involved students can achieve more, experience positive behaviors, and be more successful.

During our family engagement night, parents will choose from the variety of winter and holiday books on hand and read them to their children. After reading the books, they will take a few moments to discuss the books they read and make connections to the stories with their children. The students will have their journals with them and write about what connections they had to the text.

They will write about winter moments with their families such as what they do on a snowy day, opening Christmas presents with their families, reuniting with family members, or building a snowman with friends.

They will then work together and take scissors, glue, paper punches and create a scene that depicts the connection they made to the book they read. This activity would build a better relationship amongst the students, parents, and teachers. I would also have each family take books home with them and rotate them every week. Books are hard to come by sometimes in our neighborhoods and having extra books to check out would be very beneficial to my students and their families. I will also use these materials to engage in more than one family engagement night.
