My students need pencil pouches to help reign in their lost pencils!
Who knew that pencils would be my worst enemy as a teacher?? "Teacher, I lost my pencil." Or "My pencil is broken" as we start a test. Or better yet, the electric pencil sharpener going while I am giving directions!
My 2nd grade students are from a high poverty, gang inflicted part of town.
They are amazing. They come to school each day ready to learn and to succeed. I work at this school, with these kids, because I want to give them every opportunity they deserve. Many of these students come from homes where education is not a priority.
The goal of my project is to provide pencil pouches for my students. I have requested 120 pouches so that all of 2nd grade can participate in this project. We will fill the pouches with 8 pencils, that the students will need to keep track of throughout the week. At the end of the week, a student helper will collect the pouches and help sharpen the pencils. If students have managed to keep all 8 pencils, they will get a small prize. I have a friend that uses this system in her class and it's amazing! No more lost pencils.
This project will give students accountability for their own materials, while helping to ease the chaos of lost, broken or unsharpened pencils.
Students across the grade level will be included in this project.
