This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that PENCILS would be one of my worst teacher nightmares. The violent whirring of the electric pencil sharpener. The wails of students without writing utensils during independent work. I am determined to win the pencil war!

I am blessed to teach 18 first grade gifted students in a neighborhood school in an urban part of Florida.

My school is a Title I school, which means that over 70% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. My students have a wide variety of learning needs and challenges. My students are eager to learn.

My Project

Winning the Pencil War will foster responsibility and build a positive classroom community. Each student will get a pencil pouch with 8 pencils for the week, and one pink carnation eraser. It is the responsibility of each student to keep track of their 8 pencils and eraser and return them safely to their pouch after each use. Every Friday, a student helper will collect the pouches. Another student helper will sharpen the pencils. If all 8 pencils are in the pouch on Friday afternoon, they will find a small prize and coupon saying: "I'm a friend of pencils" in their pouch on Monday morning when the pouches are returned. If there are any pencils missing, (THIS IS THE KEY) the pencil(s) WILL be replaced, but no prize will be given and I will place a note saying "Try again next week." I will hold monthly competitions to see who can earn their prize the most- the boys or the girls? Which birth month comes out on top? It will be fun to see the results!

As I stated earlier, this project will foster responsibility and help build a positive classroom community.

In addition, it will save valuable teaching time! Here is to never hearing that pencil sharpener while I give directions EVER again!
