Winning Combination Class Deficient in Print

My students need earphone splitters so they can share 10 iPads among 24 students, and a printer with spare ink to print their projects and research.

My Students

Have you ever had to wait in line? Share? Take turns? Have you ever wished that you didn't have to hand write a report? Or had the ability to copy something so you could finish reading it? It's frustrating isn't it?

I have the most fantastic combination 2nd and 3rd grade class.

Although they're not identified yet, I am assuming 80% of my class is gifted. I have 16 second graders, and 8 third graders. There are 14 girls and 10 boys. Some of my students are on free or reduced meal programs. Many of the students are bilingual. We are a very diverse group who love to learn in a cooperative setting.

My Project

We are in the middle of an educational shift in pedagogy. The new emphasis is on real world problem solving. At our school we are doing this through Project Based Learning. Students get to discover and delve into subjects they want to learn about within the guidelines set by federal and state learning standards. They work cooperatively, and independently setting goals, solving problems, and learning. Our school along with one other LAUSD school was awarded a grant to purchase iPads, after all the iPads were distributed my class received 10. Which means 3 students per iPad. It makes it difficult to do research, work on fluency, practice math skills, use iWorks applications, etc. With the earphone splitters more than one child will be able to hear the iPad during independent work time. With a wireless airprinter, kids will be able to look up research and print it to read later or take notes. They will also be able to print their reports from Pages, Keynote, and Numbers.

Unfortunately, due to budget cuts we are greatly underserved with even basic technology that most private schools take for granted.

We must bridge the technological divide in order to be able to compete locally and globally. I wish all my students had laptops, printers, and Internet connections. But they don't. We need your donation. Your gift will not only help us in the present, it will help us with all of our futures.
